Greenberg Traurig Tallahassee Expands Real Estate, Public Finance Capabilities with Addition of Jason Merritt

Greenberg Traurig, PA global law firm added Jason E. Merritt to its real estate, public finance and infrastructure skills in its Tallahassee office.

Merritt, who joined Greenberg Traurig as Of Counsel, will work closely with the firm’s Public Finance team on the sale and disposal of real estate assets in the context of managing distressed or defaulted publicly funded bond projects, including public infrastructure, low-income housing, healthcare facilities , Senior housing and charter schools.

The addition of Merritt is a continuation of the company’s growth in the field, which included the addition of the Tallahassee Public Finance Shareholder in March Brian A. Crumbakerwho represents bondholders and trust companies in connection with distressed or distressed high yield bonds, landowner bankruptcies, foreclosures and reorganizations.

Merritt and Crumbaker are both former shareholders of Hopping Green & Sams, a Tallahassee Boutique law firm that ceased operations in November.

One of the matters Merritt has handled in the past is advising Indenture’s trustee on the acquisition and sale of a 560-unit apartment building in Jefferson County, Kentucky; and representation of a fiduciary-controlled special purpose vehicle (SPE) in the sale of a Livermore, California former establishment of a charter school.

Among the general commercial real estate transactions he oversees, he represented an institutional investor in the sale of an approved area for assisted living in Palm Beach County. He has represented landowners and developers in commercial transactions as well as lenders and borrowers in commercial real estate lending matters. He has advised clients on the acquisition and financing of multi-family housing projects and owners on the sale of agricultural land to property developers.

In addition to Merritt’s commercial real estate experience, he has served as a counsel for several community and public bodies in the Central Florida Area where he advised on contract, real estate, finance, construction and procurement issues. He also has extensive title insurance experience and is qualified to issue title insurance through First American Title Insurance Company.

A Florida A native, Merritt earned his JD with Honors from the University of Florida Levin College of Law and received his BS summa cum laude at Florida State University. He is a member of Florida Bar and its real estate, estate and trust law department.
