Durban North resident starts Christmas lights Facebook group
WHEN Christmas approaches, several houses, public parks and streets in downtown Durban have their Christmas lights turned on to add to the Christmas spirit in the city.
For Gill Armor, a Durban North resident, this provided an opportunity to start a Facebook group called Chasing the Christmas Lights to help families find the best places to see Christmas lights in and around Durban North.
“I actually started the site last year. I remember seeing so many comments on the neighbors of Durban North and other Facebook groups asking, “Does anyone know where to find the best Christmas lights?” An idea crossed my mind and I thought, ‘Why not open a page?’. This allows people to share where they saw beautiful homes, shops and public areas lit up.
One of the best places to see spectacular Christmas lights is on the Trail of Lights in the Durban Botanical Gardens.
“We were also in the middle of the second wave of Covid-19 infections and it was safer for me to drive around to look at the lights than to gather in large numbers. I was pretty excited about how the members received the group. People are constantly sharing the places of the Christmas lights and it’s exciting to see. It also helps pinpoint locations so you don’t have to spend all night looking for the lights, ”explained Armor.
When asked what some of her favorite Christmas lights are, Armor said she has three in particular.
“The Durban Botanical Gardens has the magical outdoor Trail of Lights that is simply a spectacular visual treat for the eyes. It’s great for families too. In Durban North I would say Annie’s Busy Beez on Romsey Grove and Remax Glenashley on Newport Avenue. I would love to see the site grow and more people share their photos. I encourage them to join in and share the joy, ”she said.
