Bad cops seem to be easily dealt with by the judiciary. Two local businessmen are suing the county over the mask order. Governor Hogan has extended open registration for the Maryland Health Connection. The federal website to get free COVID tests in the mail to your home is live – COVIDTests.gov is the place to be. The Annapolis City Council is back to virtual meetings. The 10th Annual Oyster Roast and Sock Burn at Annapolis Maritime Museum & parking is on! And the line-up for this year’s Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival is amazing! Good morning, It’s Wednesday 18th January 2022 and THIS is your eye on Annapolis Daily short messages.
Well, it sounds like January doesn’t disappoint snow lovers. I’ve heard all the talk about possibly two storms in the next week. But we let George put us ahead of the game. OK, news. Let’s get into that… shall we?
Some disturbing police news on the city and county frontlines. Last week we heard from the city cop who worked part-time at Walmart security and stole thousands of dollars’ worth of merchandise — a Baltimore County judge suspended his entire sentence. Now we hear that a Howard County judge gave an Anne Arundel County police officer probation before sentencing after he had a drunken fight with his brother when they assaulted cops. And in the Trifecta, an Anne Arundel County judge dismissed a case against an Annapolis detective who was basically not investigating cases he was supposed to be investigating, including multiple cases of sexual assault and rape. He just closed them. The judge threw out the case because the police violated his rights by questioning their own. The judge said there was a “fundamental lack of understanding on the part of the police department of what is required”. Incidentally, the accused police officer resigned before the internal investigation could be completed. Well, if that’s not a ringing confirmation APD I’m not sure what is. And no wonder that the police and the judiciary are mistrusted. It really does seem like the good old boy network is at work.
County Executive Pittman and Dr. As expected, Kalyanaraman will be sued over the mask mandate. The complaint was filed on Friday and requested an injunction. Two businessmen, James Zimmerer, who owns Foundation Fitnesss on Industrial Drive, and Pasquale Carranante, a Pasadena real estate agent at Remax, filed the lawsuit and the county was served with the papers yesterday. No hearing was scheduled. Speaking to the media yesterday, County Executive Pittman said he was ready to fight the lawsuit and couldn’t see a judge granting it based on the COVID numbers. dr However, Kalyanaraman also said he has no intention of extending his order beyond the 31st. Again, it seems like an exercise in futility based on the timeline.
Governor Hogan, citing the ongoing state of emergency and the success of the program, has extended the open enrollment deadline for the Maryland Health Connection to the end of February. A record number of people have signed up for 2022. Personally, I’m one of the 181,603 who signed up. It’s very easy to do and if you don’t have insurance it’s a literal life saver. And oddly enough, we have some of the lowest rates in the nation and some of the largest percentages of people receiving bounty assistance. MarylandHealthConnection.gov is where you want to go.
Another website you must visit is COVIDTests.gov. This is the federal site where you can have COVID tests mailed to you at home. President Biden has bought a billion tests and says they have enough for every home in America. You are free. COVIDTests.gov will redirect you to the post office’s website where you simply enter your address. We hear apartment buildings have a hard time sharing an address. If you are rejected and live in a condo or apartment, simply enter your condo number in the address field and address in the condo number field. Call me a skeptic, but I’m not sure putting a billion tests in the hands of the Post is a good thing. I keep having flashbacks to Christmas 2020 and just today I received another Christmas card which was sent to me on December 2nd. But maybe they will surprise me.
The Annapolis City Council is returning to virtual meetings for the duration of the 90-day state of emergency declared Jan. 10. All committees and commissions will also meet virtually, but the departments open to the public will remain open – finance, city clerks, licenses and permits, transportation and the recreation center.
Something that is NOT virtual is the 10th Annual Oyster Roast and Sock Burn. I know we’re talking about snow today, but March 19th from 12pm to 4pm is the day to be there Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park in Eastport for the annual event. Slurp up some oysters (yuck), sip some frosty drinks, listen to some tunes and burn off those stinky socks from winter because spring is just around the corner! Tickets are available now – amaritime.org is the place to be. The cost is $40, $10 for children 5-10 years old. Kids 5 and under get in for free, and there’s a special People’s Choice ticket for $95 that includes access to some food, the best oyster dish in Annapolis, some drinks, and a little more! And something that excites me…or maybe I should say it’s blues is the Chesapeake Bay Blues Festival. It’s back after a two year hiatus and the lineup is hot… Joss Stone, The Spinners – yes, THE Spinners, and my musician crush – Samantha Fish! Tickets are available now at bayblues.org and the dates are May 21st and 22nd at Sandy Point!
On Monday Ann spoke about her high school financial literacy program and we hopped on the phone real quick yesterday to chat about it. I think I screwed up and you might not have pushed it to yourself – so I’ll pin it at the end of today’s DNB.
