Did Amarillo Use to Have a Catholic College You Could Attend?

We had a discussion the other day and I thought I knew a lot about Amarillo. I mean, I’ve lived here most of my life. Being a part of this community for over 35 years has given me some knowledge of the area.

How could I not know about this college?

When I heard about it, I was stunned. Someone mentioned the fact that Amarillo used to go to a Catholic college? Really? How could I not know? I mean, I grew up Catholic. When I lived in Chicago, it was never a question of what religion you belong to. All were just Catholic.

So I didn’t realize this question was necessary until I moved here to the Texas Panhandle. So this conversation about college here seemed really new to me. So I had to do some digging.

I reached out to my friend Jeff. Luckily, I have many friends here who are heavily involved in the Catholic community, so I knew he would be able to shed some light on the subject.

What’s in a name anyway?

So yes, there was a place called Price Memorial College that was founded in 1929, but it wasn’t a college. According to Jeff:

So I assume the Catholic college they are referring to was Price Memorial College which was founded circa 1929. It was actually a high school. It finally became Alamo Catholic High School in 1966.

I can see where the confusion would be. I mean it has college in the name. In fact, it wasn’t. In fact, they changed the name to Price Catholic High School in 1964. This was because of the college name confusion. That makes sense.

You can read more about the school HERE. So Amarillo had a Price Memorial College, the only problem is that it never really was a college. So no, this is a mystery that has been solved.
