After two years of unavoidable hurdles, a popular summer event is returning to full force.

South Cooking Lake Trail Days will be taking over the community on Saturday, August 20 from 9 am until 4 pm
“We’ve been running it off and on in some capacity for more than 40 years,” explained Aila Buck-Merritt, chair of the organizing committee. “My kids were riding on floats when they were little and they’re all grown up now.”
With the all-day event starting with a pancake breakfast at 9 am, Buck-Merrit said there is lots to do all day.
“During the pancake breakfast, if the weather permits, the ReMax Balloon will be taking people up and down and then after breakfast the parade gets underway,” Buck-Merrit said. ”After the parade wraps up, there is a market and then a car show. We’ll also be having a history walk, a horseshoe tournament, and all kids of activities for the kids and a full day of family fun.”

Admission is free.
The organizer noted that it is nice to have the annual tradition back in full swing.
“Last year, we did a partial event, but because restrictions weren’t fully lifted we couldn’t do everything, so this is the first full one we had since COVID,” she said, adding the turnout last year was amazing. “We were really quite surprised at the amount of people that showed up. Everybody had been stuck at home and were happy to get out and do anything.”
This year’s event is expected to draw a big turnout.
“We’re expecting at least 1,000, if not more. It is supposed to be a beautiful day, so I’m sure we’ll be very busy,” the organizer said.
This year’s event will feature a parade from 10 am until 12 pm and then a kids play zone, a market, a horseshoe tournament, a car show, beer gardens and concessions from 12 pm until 4 pm

“The kids love the bouncy houses and all the games at the lake. The car show is also very popular and our history walk, which is something new, I think will be very popular this year,” she said.
The history walk will help residents, new and old, learn about the communities past.
“We’ve got a bunch of old pictures and blown them up and whenever possible they will be placed where they were took way back when. You will also get a pamphlet with write ups to go with the pictures,” she said. “We’ve also got some golf carts for people who can’t walk around as easily.”
Trail Days operates with a park ‘n ride system to keep traffic away from the festivities. Those attending can park at the South Cooking Lake Fire Hall — located at 22142 South Cooking Lake Road — and catch a lift to the event.
