Dear City Council,
We respectfully call the City Council to action regarding the matter of Harmony Park to both add Harmony Park to an upcoming agenda and to call for a vote for the approval of Harmony Park.
The initial discussion began January 2021 and has undergone several alterations. Detailed assessments have been made on construction and maintenance costs. We have chosen the ideal location to boost foot traffic near downtown and Legacy Plaza. An astounding amount of your constituents have spoken! Currently the project has raised nearly $400,000 from local families and businesses. Significant feedback has been gathered to yield a safe and elegant water feature, public restrooms, year-round musical sculptures, open green space for community events, covered patio seating and food truck parking. Patrons of all ages will find a place to gather for timeless photos, conversation, music, food, refreshment, and new relationships.
This is not another “someday” or “dream” project. A public space such as Harmony Park has become a defining element of growing communities in Iowa. Young families, seasoned natives, and food and beer tourists from surrounding areas will bring their families and get to know Newton as we add such a park! Families will be less likely to take their weekend entertainment dollars elsewhere if we can create a zero-dollar admission gathering place. Now is the time to vote and bring this project to reality!
The design and fundraising committee has upheld their end of the bargain and rallied the expected funds. The staggering, nearly $400,000 raised is a powerful statement that cannot be ignored. City Council members, please listen to our voices. Many of us listed below have called Newton home for our entire lives, and even more of us moved to this area filled with hope of growing this community to its full potential. Let us take a critical step forward and vote ”Yes” on approving the Harmony Park project in its strategic location, 224 W. Third St. N., between downtown Newton and Legacy Plaza!
