4 Examples Of The Best — And Worst — Marketing In 2017

There are these commercials that you can’t help but tell your friends about because they make you laugh every time, and there are those that get on the subject of negative conversation, like the Kendall Jenner Pepsi commercial mishap, but about it we won’t speak one.

This year has seen some of the best marketing efforts, as well as some big failures. Here are the two best and two worst ads of 2017.

The best ads of 2017

Snapchat’s dancing hot dog

If there’s one thing that has taken the internet by storm and led to a generation of memes, it is Snapchat’s dancing hot dog.

While the dancing hot dog isn’t technically an advertisement, it spawned the creative process and took the brand to new heights. It also influenced other brands that jumped on the bandwagon of dancing 3D objects.

“The Talk” by Procter & Gamble

Brands didn’t shy away from delving into the hot topics of the year, though for some it was a big flop and backfired (see Kendall Jenner’s ad above).

At Procter & Gamble, however, this was a different case. It passed with flying colors in its emotional, heartbreaking space, which features several African American parents talking to their children about the various instances in which the color of their skin could affect the way they are treated by others.

The worst ads of 2017

While marketers are pushing their right foot forward, sometimes they can’t avoid launching campaigns that aren’t as good as they’d hoped. This year was no exception.

There have been marketing campaigns that turned out to be deaf messages, while others were far from politically correct and had other slip-ups that guaranteed them spots for the worst ads for 2017. Some of the worst ads were:

The Volkswagen Love Bug Spot

The German automaker has had a rough year and it seems that its woes were more than just what people read in the papers.

The Luv Bug commercial is a more literal TV commercial in which creativity appears to have been spilled with the bathwater, leading some to say that the Volkswagen’s credibility was as jeopardized as its creativity.

The NetflixChristmas Prince’s Tweet

Netflix is known for its out-of-the-box thinking when it comes to marketing campaigns, but this time around, they have a spot in the worst ads of the year.

The streaming media wanted to increase its popularity, but the plan backfired with its “Twitter for the Vacation” advert, which some described as “rather scary,” which Netflix, of course, defended.

To the 53 people who saw A Christmas Prince every day for the past 18 days, who hurt you?

While there aren’t any real estate examples here, there are absolutely lessons to be learned. Keep these examples in mind the next time you launch a marketing campaign and avoid the pitfalls you see here.
