Evictions and limited housing leave Brownsville residents with few options
HARLINGEN, Texas (KVEO) – The U.S. Treasury Department announced that Americans have been granted the most evictions year-round, and housing experts say there won’t be many housing options for those who are evicted.
In Brownsville, Erica Serna and Roberto Longoria live in Calli Village Apartments, but when they asked to pay the month-to-month contract they were turned down and then abruptly evicted.

“She had told us that she wanted to get us out of the premises by 5pm at the end of June 30,” said Serna.
According to the White House Treasury Department, 290,000 more Americans were also served in June.
Now, however, Serna and Longoria need to quickly find a solution for their son Xavier, who suffers from attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder and autism.

“It’s super hard, everything is gone, I look online, there is nothing available, not to mention that he has motor problems, he is very clumsy, I can’t get anything up on stairs,” said Serna.
Serna and Longoria have lived in Calli Village Apartments for five years, but they were late on renting last year due to the pandemic.
Even though they paid all they owed, they cannot sign for another year, and instead of allowing them to pay monthly, management evicted them. Now they are worried about where they are going and how their son is going to adapt.

Now the predictions of housing experts are coming in, more evictions will follow, but there are only a few alternatives available.
“Anything under $ 1,300 a month is renting out pretty quickly – I’ve seen it stay in the market for maybe 1-2 days,” said Edson Carbajal, a real estate agent. “We have more tenants, more buyers than we have inventory available.”

Others say it has to do with construction costs as well, which makes apartments the first choice for many families looking for affordable housing.
“Builders don’t build single-family homes anymore, it’s so expensive to build and land is so expensive, so housing is the only option for so many people,” said Norma Hinojosa, owner and broker of ReMax Elite South Texas.
KVEO asked Calli Village Apartments for an interview, but they declined.
