It seems like the summer holidays are coming to an end this year, and in a few weeks the start of school will be in full swing. Whether it’s your first year or the final year after secondary school, we’ve put together a list of do’s and don’ts to help you prepare for the school year.

Do you have a schedule

It doesn’t matter if this is your first year or your last post-secondary year, a schedule is key to making sure that you get all of your work / projects / assignments done on time. If sticking to a schedule isn’t your thing, there are some amazing apps out there that can help you with that.

Keep old tests and quizzes

Keeping old tests, projects, and quizzes is a great way to study for exams and a great learning resource to prepare you for upcoming exams. Regardless of the grade you received, you can learn from the mistakes.

Prioritize sleep

Getting enough sleep is essential to maintaining your health. Your mental, physical, and emotional health begins with the right amount of sleep. On average, young adults should aim for 7-9 hours a night to feel rested for the next day.

Have a dedicated work area

Make yourself a place to study and do homework that you enjoy using. Whatever works for you make sure you have a place just for you. It can just be a corner of your room, or you can even have your own desk to do what is good for you.

Meet new people

Meeting new people can be intimidating, but high school is a great opportunity to meet new people. Stay open-minded and join a club or participate in campus activities. This will make it a lot easier to make friends, some of whom can be lifelong friends.

Don’t be too strict with yourself

School is a lot of work and time with many ups and downs. Some days will be overwhelming and some days will be a breeze. You have this and you can do it! Repeat after me: ‘I have this!’

Do not hesitate

Post secondary school can be stressful! Now add the last minute timpani. The longer you postpone your studies, projects or tasks, the more stress you can get. Allow enough time to study, read notes, complete past assignments, quizzes, and projects. If you take enough time to study, you can keep your stress levels down.

Drink enough

Drink cool liquids before you feel thirsty when enjoying the summer heat to reduce the risk of dehydration. Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated drinks and stick to water, juices and, if necessary, drinks with electrolytes.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Resources are available to students through most schools and student unions. Whether you use tutors, librarians, or consultants, there are many resources available to students. You can contact Student Services for the full list of resources for each school.

School is different for everyone, so make sure you do what is best for you.
