Langdon Park Capital Announces Hires of Real Estate Industry Leaders
THE ANGEL–(BUSINESS WIRE) – Langdon Park Capital, a black-owned company Real estate investment management company, has announced two new hires to meet demand for quality housing and well-run business facilities in historically underserved neighborhoods of Blacks and Latinos. Deepa Janha will be the company’s first Head of Asset Management and will also join the company’s Investment Committee. Ms. Janha holds an MBA from Northeastern University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Jose Alvarez comes on board as a Senior Associate reporting to Raymond Junior (Director of Acquisitions, Residential). Ms. Janha and Mr. Alvarez will become Mr. Junior and Richmond McMurray (Head of Legal & Compliance) at Langdon Park Capital, founded earlier this year by Malcolm Johnson, former senior banker at JPMorgan and longtime real estate dealmaker.
Prior to Langdon Park Capital, Ms. Janha was Vice President of Asset Management at CenterCal Properties. Before that, she also held senior positions at Hidden Park Advisors and AEW Capital Management. Ms. Janha’s expertise in multiple asset classes on both coasts and her deep real estate sense, sharpened by multiple economic cycles, will add tremendous value to Langdon Park Capital’s growing investment portfolio. In addition, Ms. Janha’s proven track record in nurturing women and people of color within her professional network and as a dedicated community member will help Langdon Park Capital meet the unique needs of families and employees in its properties.
Mr. Alvarez will be responsible for market research analysis, underwriting and due diligence on new transactions. Mr. Alvarez is joining Langdon Park Capital from the CIT Group’s real estate finance team. His additional work experience includes auditing private equity real estate companies at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Mr. Alvarez is from the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles and received his undergraduate degree from Boston College.
Raymond Junior will continue to lead Langdon Park Capital’s residential platform. Mr. Junior has over three decades of commercial real estate industry experience, including nineteen years at JPMorgan where he served as a director in the company’s Community Development Banking group and as the regional head of underwriting. Mr. Junior is responsible for Langdon Park Capital’s residential investment opportunities, including sourcing deals and negotiating partnership agreements and acquisition terms. Mr. Junior holds an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management and a BS with a major in Real Estate Finance from the University of Southern California.
“For me, this is a great opportunity to do something that I’ve always been doing, that I enjoy doing and that I’m involved in, which is community development,” said Junior. “We can actually do our part by uncovering diamonds in the raw materials that may not have had an opportunity to work with institutional resources and can now work with our company. It’s a win-win situation. We will of course benefit from it, but the people who work with us will also benefit from it. ”
Richmond McMurray manages the company’s business risk and ensures that it complies with federal and state laws and regulations. Mr. McMurray is also responsible for the implementation of legal strategies in the interests of the firm while promoting its core values of integrity, transparency and integration. Prior to Langdon Park Capital, Mr. McMurray was vice president of the legal department at Athene, a publicly traded insurance company. He was also previously an attorney at Latham & Watkins LLP and a manager in the accounting practice of KPMG LLP. He has an MBA from Harvard University and a JD from Harvard Law School.
“What attracted me is the connection I had with Malcolm and the sense of alignment and purpose that I had never experienced before and that I was looking for in addition to the organization’s underlying mission,” said McMurray. “I saw Langdon Park Capital as an opportunity to do something very useful, to use capitalism for good.”
Mr. McMurray and Mr. Junior share a deep understanding of the types of churches Langdon Park Capital serves, having originally come from two of the most ethnically diverse churches in Los Angeles, South LA and the Inland Empire, respectively. Ms. Janha notes that Langdon Park Capital’s management team has firsthand knowledge of black and Latin American communities that sets the company apart: “Our leadership team grew up in predominantly black and Latin American neighborhoods that were underserved and significant social and economic Had challenges. It’s personal when you have this as a childhood experience. Your motives for social impact go beyond a social media hashtag or a popular industry trend. ”
“Our differentiator is the capabilities of our team members and their belief in building bridges and empowering entire communities,” said Mr. Johnson, CEO of Langdon Park Capital. “I am incredibly grateful to have put together an excellent leadership team in every respect that is diverse, dynamic and anchored in the communities in which we own and operate real estate. We strive to deploy capital and use our relationships to empower the deserving people who live and work in our buildings. ”
Langdon Park Capital has been well received by institutional investors, including Kennedy Wilson (NYSE: KW), who provided significant capital for the company’s investment activities as well as seed capital for Langdon Park Capital’s operating platform. In addition, Langdon Park Capital has previously identified transactions in Los Angeles, Washington, DC and Chicago that will allow the company to acquire existing real estate and begin implementing the physical renovations and social services that will add value and the lives of community residents to enhance.
Langdon Park Capital’s immediate plans in certain existing properties include performing physical renovations, training residents in construction and maintenance, assisting local public schools and neighboring recreation centers, and providing special spaces in the properties for programs for residents, including healthy cooking classes, after school enrichment programs, and health exams.
