Brazil’s ARES developing new lightweight RCWS

Brazil’s ARES Aeroespacial e Defesa, a local Elbit Systems operation, is completing a prototype of its REMAX family (Reparo de Metralhadora Automatizado X) of the new generation of stabilized remote controlled weapon stations (RCWS) for armored tracked and wheeled vehicles.
The REMAX 4, which has been developed together with the Brazilian Army Technology Center since the end of 2019, is suitable for the M2HB 12.7 × 99 mm and MAG58 7.62 × 51 mm machine guns.

The new RCWS will be tested at the Army Evaluation Center on an Iveco VBTP-MSR Guarani 6 × 6 armored vehicle once the prototype is ready by the end of the year, the company’s marketing and trade director Frederico Medella told Janes. The RCWS is proposed for Brazilian and export markets, Medella added.
With automatic target tracking, the new RCWS measures around 690 mm high and weighs around 200 kg.
It uses a flat, biaxial, gyro-stabilized weapon mount with weapon holder, ammunition feed system, ammunition magazine for 300 12.7 × 99 mm or 600 7.62 × 51 mm cartridges, four 76 mm smoke grenade launchers, self-made slip ring, ballistic computer, motion control equipment and a fire control system shaft , in which a gyroscope unit and an electro-optical imager OIP EOPTRIS 2.0 are mounted. It also includes a daytime camera, an uncooled thermal camera, and an eye-safe laser rangefinder that are independent of the weapon bay.
The turret is controlled by the internal shooter’s high-resolution display from Elbit Systems, which is connected to a control handle. A commander’s high-definition display is available as an option.
The tower can be connected to an E-LAWS 2 laser warning system from Elbit Systems, which is installed in the hull of the vehicle. The Army is investigating the expansion of the optronic suite with ballistic protection.
