House Lust: Pleasure Island, a Private Island in Swansea’s Ocean Grove, is on the Market
The property, which also runs past Shady Isle, is connected to the mainland by a bridge.
Some people remember this place as Shady Isle, a popular spot for families to enjoy clams under the trees. Others may recall his tenure as Pleasure Island, a boisterous banquet venue that went dark over a bridge dispute. Last year the island was back in the news when a potential buyer hoped to re-operate the island – which is technically zoned – as a functional facility.
“Swansea had a special option during COVID, however [voters] shot down, so that the deal failed, ”says Genevieve Pappas of RE / MAX Right Choice, who listed the island in the summer. “We had a lot of interest, but so far nothing solid. Most of the people I show it to want to use it for residential purposes, like family property. “
The island has four buildings: a two-bedroom house, an open pavilion, an enclosed pavilion, and a waterfront building that once housed a business office. The island is connected to the mainland by a 300-foot bridge and has water, gas, and electricity connections to the city.
“Anyone who buys it has to do quite a bit of construction and bridge repairs,” says Pappas, adding that she leads potential buyers over the bridge instead of driving over it with them. “It’s passable, but it’s not considered safe.”
The repairs are the responsibility of the buyer, says Pappas. But when you’re done, there’s nothing more to do than enjoy your own 4.25 acre island that’s close to everything but far enough away to make you feel like you are in paradise.
