Adam Contos Shares The 3 Principles Behind RE/MAX’s Success
RE / MAX is on the road to success with solid results in the first quarter of 2021, the successful launch of its First app and the completion of its largest franchise acquisition in the company’s history. With that in mind, RE / MAX CEO Adam Contos said the company is well on the way to having one of the best years since it was founded in 1973.
“[Our earnings] says a lot about the quality of our franchisees, the quality of the agents they hire, the quality of our tools and services, and most importantly, the quality of the customer experience you can expect from REMAX worldwide, ”he said in May during a merit call. “That momentum continues today, and we look forward to sharing more good news throughout 2021.”
How does Contos manage to run one of the oldest and best-known real estate brands in the country? The important thing is to prefer the weight of discipline to the weight of regret.

“We have two kinds of pains in life,” he told Forbes contributor and corporate competitor podcaster Don Yaeger on Wednesday. “We face the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. So many people come through life and they start to look back and have this pain of regret not to open their eyes and say, “I will face this pain of discipline” when they submit to themselves to find out what to be successful means. ”
Contos said his experience as Chief of Navy and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) prepared him to take the helm at RE / MAX and create a culture where discipline, collaboration and enthusiasm are key.
“Most people overlook the intrinsic quality of enthusiasm that builds up in a marine over time,” he explained. “Why are you running up a hill while someone is trying to shoot you or blow you up? It’s because you have this enthusiasm for supporting the person next to you. “
“You will go out there and do it no matter what anyone says,” he added.
Specifically, Contos said his business strategy boils down to three things: prioritizing people over processes, using success as a stepping stone, and recruiting people who fit your culture.
“Too often executives worry about a company’s internal returns, growth opportunities or future valuation,” he said of RE / MAX’s acquisition, merger and partnership strategy, which has recently focused on strengthening the company’s technology offerings concentrated. “You forget to look at people. The numbers are old history. It’s the people who get you where you want to go. “

When choosing which partners to work with, according to Contos, it’s important to choose those who are already in line with your company’s culture. The CEO said he attracts people and companies that have a collaborative mindset and value collective success as much as personal success.
“There is no synergy between the All-Stars, no culture,” he told Yaeger. “The same goes for business. You can go out and find the best performing people in your company, but if they are there for themselves, if they are pro bowlers but not team players, your organization will lack a heart and soul – that great balance between personal responsibility and shared purpose that holds a team together. “
Finally, Contos said the ultimate key to longevity and success is to resist the urge to rest on your laurels.
“You always try to get better and you try to give more to your fellow human beings,” he said. “I’ve never felt, ‘Tada! I did it! I am a CEO! ‘ I’m not ready. I don’t think I’ll ever be finished. “
