Commercial Real Estate Company Celebrates 100th Anniversary

The Barry Company was founded by James T. Barry Sr. in 1921 and originally focused on suburban housing development in and around Milwaukee.

When the Great Depression hit, the company shifted its focus to handling foreclosures and brokerage orders for First Wisconsin Bank. In the 1940s, the company helped the federal government find factory space for the war effort, and in the 1960s, the company helped develop Wisconsin’s first industrial and office parks.

The Barry Company has been consistently involved in many of the largest and most momentous real estate transactions in Wisconsin, including organizing the land composition for the US bank building development, the massive Amazon distribution center in Kenosha, and the location of the new Milwaukee Public Museum.

The company has been a leader in structuring sale / leasebacks for companies such as Harley-Davidson, Snap-On, Inc., Harken, Bentley Worldwide Packaging and many others. The Barry Company’s specialty has always been the brokerage of large industrial, office and real estate transactions.

The Barry Company routinely received the Commercial Association of Realtors of Wisconsin’s (CARW) Deal of the Year Award, most recently winning in 2020 for structuring an office rental and sales transaction for the Bradley Foundation. The company has received numerous awards for its transactional acumen and creativity from numerous organizations.

Throughout its history, the Barry Company has been very committed to the Milwaukee community. James T. Barry Sr. was a corporate and national who handled real estate affairs for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and other not-for-profit organizations. James T. Barry Jr., who died in 2019, served as President of the Milwaukee Board of Realtors and served on the boards of many civil and nonprofit groups, including the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce. James T. Barry III, currently serving as President of the Barry Company, is a past chairman of CARW, the Milwaukee Rotary Club, Wisconsin Policy Forum, the Milwaukee Chapter of the American Red Cross, and a past co-chair of the United States Performing Arts Fund (UPAF). He He currently serves on the board of directors of the Bradley Foundation, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, the UWM Foundation, and the Treasury Council of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, as well as numerous other organizations.
