Good morning, it’s Thursday, December 9th, 2021 and THAT is your eye on Annapolis Daily news letter.
Sixteen shopping days until Christmas – just like that. Hey, how did you all … or for you, Pittsburgh … yinz … like the Annapolis After Dark music segment with Beeper Buzz? Send me feedback – hopefully we’ll do better this way. OK, we have some news so let’s get into that, right?
Well, this first story shouldn’t come as a surprise. The State Department of Education says the pandemic has resulted in student learning losses across the country. The results are preliminary, but they say there have been declines in English, language arts, math, and kindergarten readiness. Nationwide tests for grades 3 through 8 showed that only 35% met expectations in English, 39% for science and 15% for math. As far as the kindergarten entrance qualification is concerned, only 40% fulfilled these expectations. The final report will be released in January, but for now the state is sending the results to the districts so they can speed up the learning programs to catch up. I think it will be a while before we are caught up.
That’s neat. Governor Hogan has named Katie Gandy as the first national autism coordinator. It’s a new position that aims to improve public relations and education about autism. Gandy comes from the Howard County Autism Society, which she ran for three years. A welcome addition.
Congratulations and thanks to the Anne Arundel County Association of Realtors. They jumped headlong into Harvest for the Hungry Food Drive this year, looking to beat last year’s loot of 155,000 pounds of food. Well, the trucks were all unloaded, and they did. 160,469 groceries were brought to the Anne Arundel County Food Bank to be given to our neighbors in need. The top three brokers were … and they really deserve praise … Remax Executive at £ 55,000, Remax Experience at £ 49,000, and Keller Williams Flagship at £ 31,000. Well done!
