Former NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea to join Hudson Yards real estate firm

NYPD’s former top cop is headed back to work.

Related companies, the real estate behemoth that runs the Hudson Yards, has tapped Dermot Shea to be its president of related commercial property management, a position it created for the former NYPD commissioner.

Shea, 52, won’t be handling security for related companies and will instead oversee management and operations of the firm’s commercial office and mixed-used properties, the company said in a news release.

“Joining Related represents an exciting new chapter in my career and I’m looking forward to working with this already incredibly strong team,” Shea said in a statement.

“Property management is a new challenge, and one that I’m looking forward to leveraging my management skills and data-driven strategies to deliver the best experience for tenants, customers, and visitors to our properties.”

Jeff Blau, Related Companies’ CEO, said the firm is “thrilled” to welcome Shea to the team.

“Dermot Shea is an accomplished and experienced leader who will bring unparalleled integrity to our commercial property management operation,” Blau said.

Shea put in his retirement papers with the NYPD in December after newly minted Mayor Eric Adams announced he’d be appointing Keechant Sewell to replace him.

The Queens native spent 30 years with the NYPD, two of which he spent as the commissioner leading the department through some of its toughest times in decades.

He helmed the agency throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, racial justice protests following the police death of George Floyd and a citywide spike in shootings and homicides.

Related Companies noted Shea is known for his “innovative, data-driven management strategies” and it’s looking forward to “leveraging his management skills and expertise.”
