HELEN NELSON Obituary (1939 – 2021) – Fredericksburg, TX
Surrounded by loved ones, Helen Augusta Schumann Nelson was called home to the Lord on Tuesday evening, July 22, 2021. As the only child of Gustave Allen “Dick” Schumann and Thekla Dücker Schumann, she was born on February 15, 1939 in. born San Antonio. Helen attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Fredericksburg (1954-1957), where she was active in the dramatic arts, particularly piano, theater and choir. In 1957 she was named “Queen Helen of the house of Schumann” at the Gillespie County Fair as Fair Queen. The following year, Helen was crowned Miss Fiesta San Antonio in 1958. On January 1, 1959, she represented San Antonio at the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, where she met Ronald Reagan. Her escort for the parade was Audie Murphy. Later that year, Helen traveled to Cuba to represent the San Antonio Fiesta Commission, where she met Fidel Castro. In 1962, she graduated from Incarnate Word University in San Antonio, Texas with a bachelor’s degree in education. After that he was a 1st grade teacher at NEISD for 15 years. On December 28, 1963, she married Donald Nelson of San Antonio, Texas. As her children grew up, her ambition to become a real estate agent became a reality – in the early 1980s she joined Of Rosow and Klein and then the REMAX MEGA GROUP. Her deep-rooted love for the country, strong social connections, and firm belief in the importance of home and family made her instantly successful. Member of the Catholic Church of St. Anthony de Padua, Oak Hills Country Club, member of the “Fearless Four” and the Million Dollar Club with the Remax Mega Group. She was an avid tennis player and enjoyed many bridge games. Helen was beautiful, strong, outspoken, exuberant, glamorous, generous, loving, loyal and above all devoted to her family. She was proud of her German Texas Hill Country heritage. Her love and devotion for her parents, husband, children and friends were omnipresent. Helen loved being a modern country girl with her friends and family in Fredericksburg. Possibly legendary, she was passionate about fashion. Shop and keep up with the latest fashion, make everything beautiful with beautiful flower arrangements, candles and room fragrances. Celebrate Christmas and the holidays with baking, decorations, gifts and cozy cocktail parties. She has always enjoyed going to Las Vegas since the 1960s and had a lot of fun and luck playing the slot machines. “If there is a will, there is a way” is something she lived by – everything she set out to do, she succeeded and she enjoyed the journey.
She leaves behind her 58-year-old husband Donald A. Nelson, daughters Michelle Lucette Nelson and Jennifer Nelson Cox, son-in-law David M. Cox and her grandsons Quinten Nelson Cox and Liam Ashby Cox. She also leaves behind her brother-in-law Bernie Nelson and wife Patty, her sister-in-law Carolyn Davis from Dallas, and her sister-in-law Kathy Nelson from San Antonio. Her cousin Lottie Demel and her husband Flo from Fredericksburg. Also many nieces, nephews, cousins in San Antonio, Ft. Worth and Dallas and 2 King Charles Cavaliers Lucy and Cici.
She was led to her death by her parents and close cousins Patrica “Patsy” Herndon, Tricia Hernden, Alfred “Butch” Duecker, Darlene Weinheimer, Ronald “Ronnie” Duecker, and brother-in-law Bruce Nelson – the Alzheimer’s Association would be grateful.
