(Oskaloosa, IA) – ‘In the week after the parade, and around the square, the windows were decorated with holiday flair! From Hawkeye to ReMax, Brown’s to Brushed by Jude and The Office to Crouse’s, 15 posters tell the classic story: ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas – each illustrated by a local artist and displayed in a decorated window of a Main Street store.
It’s all part of the very first downtown Christmas Story Window Walk produced by the Golden Goose Club and Oskaloosa Main Street with funding from the Mahaska County Community Foundation. The tour was led by Vicky Collette, Vice President / Secretary of the Golden Goose Club and a volunteer on the Oskaloosa Main Street Design Committee.
“I love decorating for Christmas. Last year when I was putting everything away, I was looking through my grandson’s book, Twas the Night Before Christmas, and I realized it would be fun decorating the downtown windows, ”says Vicky Collette. “From then on, my daughter suggested that local artists have the story drawn on posters, and then it was up to the elementary school students to make paper chains and then the best part: the idea of the souvenir coloring book. Jessica with Main Street was of great help with the book. I found it was a fun way to get the people in the community together for a nice family celebration. It has developed into companies that are enthusiastic about participating, into artists who are anxious to use their talents, and into an opportunity to inspire our very young artists. We hope that our community will appreciate the event. “
The posters and decorations were put up until Saturday December 4th for the 34th annual lighted Christmas parade. The first poster is on display at Hawkeye Real Estate. The route heads west, south and east to circl the plaza and end at Crouse’s House of Flowers. Thanks to Briana Bartlett, the art teacher at Oskaloosa Elementary, paper chains created by local students from Oskaloosa Elementary and Oskaloosa Christian also adorn downtown shop windows along the route. The community is invited to join the self-guided tour at any time throughout the month. There’s even more fun on two upcoming Saturdays!
From 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 11th and Saturday, December 18th, families can check-in at a welcome table in Penn Central Mall for Christmas hats and glowing necklaces. After walking downtown to read the 15 posters, families are invited to the mall to vote for their favorite, win prizes, enjoy hot cocoa and cookies from Mahaska Drug, local children’s author Taylor Dishman too meet and get a reminder color book. The coloring book includes all 15 poster illustrations, artist information, a special Oskaloosa Christmas word search and more!
The tour is particularly festive in the glow of Painting with Lights, the dazzling Christmas lights of downtown Oskaloosa. Now in the fifth year, the glow has expanded again! Two other companies painted the facades of their buildings: Mobile Device Repair and State Farm Kelli Steil. Thanks to generous funding from the Golden Goose Club and the George Daily Family Trust, a programmable six-meter sparkling Christmas tree has been added to City Square Park. And thanks to Musco, the city of Oskaloosa and DB Landschaftsbau, the historic music pavilion also shines in bright LED light.
