The amazing vacation homes you can buy for $1 million

By Lilit Marcus, CNN

Vacation homes are one of the things that many people crave.

And with real estate prices rising in double digits recently in 90% of metropolitan areas along with other urban hubs around the world, some of these fancy properties look pretty attractive in less expensive destinations.

Although travel restrictions are still in place in many parts of the world, if we decide to uproot and buy our dream homes overseas, it is still fun to think about where we could go.

“With restrictions in most locations easing, the buying process becomes less of a chore and interest in buying overseas continues to grow,” Joyce Lee, deputy vice president of Asia Pacific at Christie’s International Real Estate, told CNN.

“Resourceful Americans continued to buy property overseas.”

What’s in $ 1 million for you today? Here are some of the properties currently on the market in some of the world’s most popular travel destinations.

Phuket, Thailand

Thailand’s Phuket Island has long been one of the most sought-after vacation spots in all of Asia, and the pandemic hasn’t changed that.

Local real estate agent Norbert Withinrich of Coldwell Banker Phuket confirms that Covid-19 may have cooled the market slightly, but not dramatically.

“Over the past 15 months we’ve seen some second home owners drop their prices,” he says, adding that some properties have even been sold over the internet without a single personal tour. But that won’t be necessary now – Phuket reopened to vaccinated travelers on July 1st.

Coldwell Banker Phuket’s million dollar offerings include a four-bedroom, four-bathroom villa in a gated community in the hills of the island just a short drive from Bang Tao Beach.

Located on a plot of 995 square meters, the house is laid out in a U-shape around a 15 meter long pool, to which the bedrooms open.

Price: 33,980,000 baht ($ 1,037,000). Find out more about the property on the Coldwell Banker Phuket website.

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

It’s not difficult to understand why Puerto Plata was the first part of the Dominican Republic to open up to tourism – between the lush green valleys and long sandy beaches, it’s basically impossible to find an unsightly view in this province.

For those who want to enjoy it from the privacy of their own home, this 3 bedroom oceanfront villa is located in the Sosua Ocean Village residential complex, just a 15-minute drive from Puerto Plata International Airport.

The villa, built in 2018, is 220 square meters and stands on a 2,088 square meter plot. The owners can walk straight out of the breakfast nook into the electric blue swimming pool or follow one of the shady footpaths down to the Atlantic.

Price: $ 1,050,000. Please see listing of Ocean Side Realty by Remax for more information.

Barcelona, Spain

Does your dream of a second home look more like a trendy urban loft than a beach villa?

The price of this design-oriented 187 square meter apartment in Barcelona’s trendy Sant Gervasi – Galvany neighborhood has just been lowered.

It has four bedrooms and two bathrooms and has been recently refurbished, carefully maintaining the original features. And did we mention the claw foot bath?

Spain recently reopened its borders to international visitors. Combine your real estate tour with stops in the cool cava bars in the neighborhood.

Price: 825,000 euros (approximately $ 971,000). For more information, see Lucas Fox International Properties.

The Bahamas

If you’ve enjoyed social distancing so much that you hope to keep it going after the pandemic, then invest in your own island.

Golding Cay is a 3.4 acre beauty just off the coast of North Eleuthera Island in the Bahamas. It’s completely empty and ready for you to build a mansion, mansion, tree house, or other lot of your choice.

Golding Cay offers privacy and breathing space, but it’s not completely cut off from the rest of the world. It is only 10 minutes by boat from the fishing village of Spanish Wells.

It’s close enough to North Eleuthera that you have easy access to the island’s airport and infrastructure, while a boat can take you to Miami in a matter of hours.

Price $ 800,000. For more information, see 7th Heaven Real Estate.

Hokkaido, Japan

If you’re one of those people who hoard your vacation days to chase powder in Vail, buy a home on Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido, home to some of Asia’s best ski resorts.

This quaint 168 square meter log cabin in world famous Niseko is unfurnished, so you can take the decorating decisions 100% into your own hands.

The two bedroom home is located in North Hills, just five minutes from the Hanazono slopes.

Los Cabos, Mexico

With a shared border of 1,933 miles, Mexico has always been a popular haven for Americans.

This includes the beach community of Los Cabos. Located on the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula, it offers wonderful views in almost all directions.

One option for sale there: This 836 m² oceanfront villa in the gated Castillos Del Mar residential complex of Rosarito Beach, which is located on a sandy beach popular with surfers.

If you prefer calmer waters, there is a gorgeous infinity pool overlooking the sea.

It has six bedrooms, six bathrooms and private beach access. According to the agent, the title will be held in club membership that will remain for about 51 years.

Price: $ 1,050,000. Contact Baja123 for more information.

Ocho Rios, Jamaica

“For the past two years, Jamaica’s real estate market has literally been on fire!” Laughs Matthew Stevenson, an agent at Coldwell Banker in Jamaica. The good news here is that you can buy houses that absolutely won’t burn, even though Stevenson’s joy is palpable.

While Caribbean islands are never hard to sell, Stevenson noted an important takeaway – Jamaicans who had moved elsewhere in the world were drawn home after the pandemic began.

According to Stevenson, many Jamaicans who had settled in countries like the US decided to wait for the Covid storm from a comfortable beach and property sales soared.

The agent recommends Americans check out areas like Ocho Rios near the famous James Bond Beach – your money will go further, but you’ll also enjoy some of the island’s most beautiful scenery.

Among properties now selling for less than a million is an 11 bedroom villa in the St. Mary Country Club, just 15 minutes from James Bond Beach. It offers sea views and over 800 m² of living space, with each bedroom having its own balcony.

Price: $ 790,000. Listed by Coldwell Banker Jamaica.

St. John, Barbados

Who needs neighbors? When you buy this house, which sits on a hill overlooking Martin’s Bay in St. John in east Barbados, you don’t have to worry about someone blocking your view.

The open-plan property has a spacious walk-in shower, a balcony from which to watch the sunrise, an elegant garden and four bedrooms where you can listen to the sound of the waves as you fall asleep.

Barbados was one of the destinations that opened up to remote workers. So if you’ve always wanted to experience life in paradise, this is your chance.

Price: $ 995,000. More information at Seaside Realty Barbados.
