Winter food hamper program for 10 Thompson seniors made last delivery March 31
A program that disabled seniors with food for the past four months ended on March 31.
The Thompson Seniors Community Resource Council (TSCRC) “Food on the Table for Winter” initiative began in December, providing 10 low-income and mobility-impaired participants with a $ 60 basket of groceries each week.
“Winter is tough enough for most of us older people with no COVID isolation, above-average snowfall, and difficulty getting around,” said Linda Dearman, chairwoman of the TSCRC, in a press release. “But if you look at some seniors and elders They barely have enough money to pay the rent. You can understand why they might need to cut back on the grocery budget. We just wanted to give this group of people access to healthier food choices. “
The program was made possible by a grant from the Thompson Community Foundation and a donation from ReMax Thompson.
“Food security is a real and frightening factor for many of our older populations,” said volunteer Kate Roth. “It’s nice to have been part of an initiative that could help alleviate this concern for some of our elderly residents.”
Other volunteers who handicapped in all weathers every Wednesday were Jean Pankratz, Greg Pelchat, Chris Pelchat, Molly Stapleton, Cora Stapleton and Heather Bonner.
Molly Stapleton said that the recipients of obstruction appreciated the shipments.
“Often times, they would look through the bag or box like it was a birthday or Christmas present, especially the people who had a grandchild,” she said.
“We couldn’t do this without volunteers,” Dearman said. “I’m glad we’re starting to rebuild a volunteer base. Even without the advice and expertise of the Ma-Mow-We-Tak Friendship Center, we couldn’t do this. They provided a lot of insight into how this program can be successful. “
The TSCRC has applied for another grant, and if they receive it, plans to put groceries on the table for low-income seniors and elders again this spring and summer.
