Stuff Announces The Sweetest Spots To Live In Aotearoa

Addington crowned the winner’s place for 2021

How do you decide where in New Zealand is the cutest place to live? With nearly 2,000 suburbs, cities, and settlements to choose from, Stuff turned to data to help solve the dilemma.

Sweet Spots is an interactive tool that combines 14 data points to identify the best places to live in 2021.

“We focused on the criteria that we believe are important to people, including affordable housing, lots of sunshine, good use of public transport, high diversity, improvement or stable prosperity, low crime, high employment, reasonably good health care and a high level of health volunteering, ”says Kate Newton, data journalist at Stuff.

“For each variable, we assigned a number of points to each suburb – more points if the suburb was rated better than the national median, fewer points if it was lower. The only exception we made was property prices. Recognizing that Auckland, and increasingly Wellington, are not keeping up with the rest of the country, we used a regional ranking system for this variable.

“Realizing that some key variables can lead to more affluent or more monocultural neighborhoods, we only looked at suburbs with above average diversity or affordable property prices and tested the results with our local reporters, who applied their local knowledge to make sure we locate really great neighborhoods. “

2021 winner

Auckland – Belmont

Tip of the North – Lynmore (Rotorua)

Down North – Durie Hill (Whanganui)

Wellington – Maungaraki

Tip of the South – Kaikōura

Christchurch (overall winner) – Addington

Bottom of the South – Hargest (Invercargill)

“Addington is a central Christchurch suburb that is young, alive and yet affordable a decade after the 2011 earthquake. It has all the makings of a really great place to live and judge what the locals say, they agree, ”says Homed editor Joanne Butcher.

“People might be surprised by some of the results, and so were we in the beginning. However, Sweet Spots is all about celebrating bags of New Zealand where people lead happy lives – not to be confused with wealthy lives. On closer inspection, we could see why our sweet spots had trumps – each of these places has a story that makes it special. “

Realizing that there isn’t a single place that is perfect for everyone, the interactive tool is now available to help people find their own sweet spot based on the things that matter most to them. You may receive a suggestion that will surprise you – and it may just inspire you to make changes.
